If Europa DevOps is going to replace Azure DevOps for European government agencies, public institutions and private enterprises, while also supporting individuals and small teams, it needs a sustainable business model. Designing that model is not trivial: it has to account for customer requirements, hosting options, licensing, support and compliance.

Cloud or on-premises

One of Europa DevOps’ key value propositions is that the platform can run in any cloud or on-premises. This affects the business model in two ways:

  1. Organizations can deploy and operate their own instance, which is attractive to customers with specific security, compliance or sovereignty requirements.
  2. At the same time, self-hosting makes it harder to sell the platform purely as a SaaS offering.

To Open Source or not to Open Source

Open source embraces the development community. For a platform like Europa DevOps, building a community with critical mass is important — not only to shape the platform in the future, but to contribute extensions and improvements today.

The three archetype models.

Model A — Fully open source Both frontend and backend are open source. This works well when the business is built around hosting, but when customers can run the entire platform themselves, it weakens the recurring revenue model. The project risks becoming a consultancy that happens to maintain a repository. Consultancies can be successful, but they do not scale in the same way as a software business.

Model B — Proprietary platform Both frontend and backend are proprietary. This protects intellectual property, but may discourage the open source community from contributing to the platform and building extensions.

Model C — Open-source frontend, proprietary backend The frontend is open for scrutiny and community contributions, while the backend remains proprietary. This allows the community to participate without giving away the entire commercial product.

Audience and Pricing model

Tier What it includes
Personal Free EU hosted, limited usage and community support.
Team Per-user pricing, EU hosting, higher limits and standard support.
Enterprise Compliance, SLA support and governance. On-premises or dedicated deployments available at a premium.

The upsell is organic. A solo developer starts on Personal. Her team grows to five, then ten, and moves to Team. As the organization grows and its requirements become more demanding — for example, requiring compliance controls, audit trails or dedicated infrastructure — it moves to Enterprise.

At every step, the model is straightforward: customers pay for what they use, and pay more when their requirements become more demanding.

Students, educators and qualifying open-source projects can be offered free or discounted access.

Summary

  • Europa DevOps can be self-hosted in any cloud or on-premises.
  • The platform will be provided as Open-source frontend, proprietary backed.
  • The pricing model allow organic growth from individuals to teams to enterprises.
  • Customers pay for the service and capabilities they need, rather than simply for a software license.

What Does Europa DevOps Provide?

By Martin Asser Hansen ·

Europa DevOps is built on the premise that a platform should serve the people doing the work, not the other way around. That is the reason why People are first in the DevOps triangle of People, Product and Process.

People Come First

Europa DevOps recognizes that people are the reason the system exists. The platform is designed to preserve their context, respect their time, and protect their agency. That means people stay immersed in the flow of product and process while keeping their own overview, having in-platform communication that let them reach the right person at the right time, and the freedom to create and contribute within a permission model that protects what should be protected and with an audit trail so accountability is built in.

AI belongs in this picture at two levels. Each person can bring a private agent that knows their context — the work items they touch, the conversations they have, their work history. The platform can also run system agents scoped to a task, a team, or a process. The boundary is not human versus machine. It is personal context versus shared context. One agent assists your work. Another assists the work itself.

The Product Is What You Care For

A product is whatever you and your team are responsible for improving. It might be software, a new product design or a public-sector workflow. Europa DevOps covers the full arc of caring for it: it

  • Planning. Organize the work so it can be seen, discussed, and adjusted using boards and work items.
  • Automation. Pipelines and orchestration that ensure reliable and consistent workflows.
  • Development. Repositories, testing, and artifact management - all traced to work items.
  • Deployment. Europa DevOps runs in the cloud or fully on-premises.

The Process Serves the Work

A process is a workflow with inputs, outputs, and decisions. In Europa DevOps, that workflow maps to a stage-gate model that describes the work at each stage and the criteria at each gate. Any business process tied to a product can be captured this way and executed by people or by automation. Processes can evolve as requirements change, and because every variant is preserved, you can always verify what process a piece of work was performed under.

Bring Your Own — BYO

Europa DevOps is built around a BYO philosophy. The platform provides standard APIs for integration with external systems, and its UI is built on a contribution model that lets extensions hook into almost any surface — dashboards, reports, boards and custom views.

Introducing Europa DevOps

By Martin Asser Hansen ·

It is time for governments, companies and private citizens to make up their minds about their dependence on U.S. Big Tech.

U.S. government is undermining EU-US Data Transfers

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is based upon oversight involving the independent Privacy and Civil Liberties OverSight Board, however, after the White House requested the resignation of Democratic board members, the independence of the board is challenged.

US Big Tech is out of control

The profits of U.S. Big Tech companies far exceed the fines imposed on them for violations of competition and privacy laws. At the same time U.S. Big Tech spends vast amounts of money lobbying.

What are the alternatives?

U.S. Big Tech have been successful in positioning themselves in a market they both have created and are now controlling. Therefore, alternative EU-sovereign products are sparse and immature. It is time to build - and we start with DevOps.

Azure DevOps is Microsoft’s flagship DevOps platform. Microsoft’s Donovan Brown defines DevOps as:

DevOps is the union of people, process, and products to enable continuous delivery of value to our end users.

Now we present Europa DevOps — a re-engineered solution that aims to surpass Microsoft Azure DevOps. And the journey starts here!
